Why Do Headlights Go Bad?

Common Causes of Cloudy or Yellowed Headlights

Over time, the plastic covering car headlights can become foggy, cloudy or start to turn yellow, stopping the lights from shining as brightly, and possibly reducing your visibility. Not to mention they don't look good. Here are some reasons why this happens.

Oxidation

Oxidation is when the polycarbonate lens which covers the acrylic headlight is worn away by the sun's rays UV radiation. As a result, the acrylic develops tiny cracks which make the lens look cloudy and yellow.

Direct Impact Road Damage

Road damage can change the appearance of car headlights. When small stones and debris hits the plastic fascia of the headlights, they cause small marks, cracks and scratches which can cause the lights to look cloudy or foggy.

Dirt and Debris

Dirt and pollution can change the appearance of plastic car headlights over time, when a thin layer builds up on the surface. This opaque layer of dirt diffuses and dims the light, interfering with the strength and direction of the main beam.

Bugs and Insects

Bugs and insects, if not cleaned immediately can surely dry up and become embedded into the headlight lens. This causes the lens to become damaged and have that cloudy and foggy look.

Poor Vehicle Hygiene

After oxidation, poor vehicle hygiene is one of the biggest factors in deteriorated headlights. Not washing your vehicle on a regular basis, makes for bugs, dirt and debris to accumulate on the headlight and become embedded and thus causing yellowing and cloudiness. Secondly, using drive thru car washes severely scratch the lenses over time because of the brushes used. Even in touch less car washes, they dry your car with towels that have wiped down and dried scores of cars on a daily basis. Those towels can scratch not only your car's paint but also the headlight lenses.
